Curators Gathering, Saskatoon


In August 2024, the first gathering took place in Saskatoon, hosted by Remai Modern, with participants: Daniel Atkinson (Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago), Sally Frater (Remai Modern), Tarah Hogue (Remai Modern), Tomas Jonsson (Independent curator; University of Regina), Alice Ming-Wai Jim (Concordia University), Srimoyee Mitra (Stamps Gallery @ University of Michigan), Crystal Mowry (McKenzie Art Gallery), Sherry Farelle-Racette (Independent curator), Léuli Eshraghi (Montreal Museum of Fine Arts), Tzu-i Chung (MOA @ University of British Columbia), and the Moss Projects team, Mel Granley, Michelle Jacques, and Toby Lawrence.

The Curators Gathering in Saskatoon was framed by a set of guiding questions:

  • What are effective ways to disseminate knowledge interdepartmentally, or between institutions and colleagues?

  • How can intergenerational and intercultural cohorts of curators/gallery practitioners come together within a gallery setting and work in a good way?

  • How can we encourage our colleagues to interrogate their own positionalities in relation to the Indigenous territories we are located and work on?

  • How can gallery practitioners create support for deeper understanding and learning through different ways of knowing and relationship-building within an institutional setting?

  • What do people feel would be most effective in their own institutions and how could these initiatives be best supported by Moss Projects?

  • What could be done to better equip gallery practitioners to meet (or exceed) the needs of historically underrepresented communities?

Key points of discussion and needs identified by the participants during our 3 days together included agreement over the necessity of cross-cultural and cross-generational cohorts, mentorship, and sustainable practices within curatorial methodologies and pedagogies, in both art museum/art spaces and spaces of learning.
